This rarely seen latter-day TerryToons piece of work is a real cult-item. Former UPA man Gene Deitch created this great looking piece of 1950s animation in the Cartoon Modern style - done in 1957. Known as Tom Terrific, these cool looking shorts aired as a segment during CBS' Captain Kangaroo from 1957-59. A far cry from awful stuff like the Captain Nemo cartoons that would own that spot during the seventies. I also highly recommend the recent Fantagraphics book that collects Deitch's short-lived and long forgotten newspaper strip Terr'ble Thompson. Deitch is one of the few living-legends left in the animation world and his introduction to the book proves he still possesses a bright, whip-sharp, satirical wit.Thursday, April 12, 2007
